What to Expect

WITH MR NITEN VIG

We recognise that visiting an ophthalmologist can be daunting, however it can be easier if you know what to expect before you arrive.

Before your Appointment

Ahead of your appointment, the time and location will be confirmed for you. Mr Vig's team may send you an online questionnaire in advance of your first attendance to get some background information. It's helpful to have any optician notes or letters from specialists you have seen before. You will also be asked for your general practice/family doctor details (if you have them) and payment/insurance information.

  •  We advise you not to drive to your appointment because if your eyes are dilated, the vision will be blurred for several hours

  • Bring your glasses/contact lenses

  • If possible, have a list of your medications and let the team know of any allergies

  • It can be helpful to write down any questions you may have

  • You are welcome to bring someone with you

During your visit

If possible, try to arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in with reception. You might be asked to fill in some forms by the hospital team.

Initial Tests:

  •  All patients will have their vision and eye pressures checked. Often the team will do an autorefraction, which is quick test to check the focusing power of the eyes

  • Depending on the clinical picture, you may also have tests such as visual fields, retinal, nerve, or corneal scans.

  • If you are having cataract surgery, you will need special measurements of the eyes called biometry to help choose the right lens

  • Most insurers will cover these tests - if you are self-funding, there may be an additional fee charged by the hospital. Further information is available from the practice team.

Dilating Drops:

  • To be able to view the back of the eye and lens properly, Mr Vig may suggest that your eyes are dilated. The drops used take about 20-30 minutes to work and the vision will be blurred for several hours afterwards.
